The Mirror Neuron Effect

Have you ever noticed how you pick up habits, phrases, or even attitudes from the people around you? This isn’t a coincidence; it’s your mirror neurons at work. I recently came across an article on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website, “Mirror Neurons: From Origin to Function” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK207238/), which dives into how these neurons fire not just when we act, but when we watch others act.

When you’re surrounded by people who gossip, cut corners, or radiate negativity; without realizing it, your mirror neurons mimic those traits, shaping your actions and thoughts. Conversely, if you’re around people who radiate honesty, integrity, or loyalty, you’re more likely to reflect *those* qualities.

The NCBI article explains that mirror neurons are key to understanding others’ intentions and actions. But, mirror neurons will mirror the toxic as readily as the virtuous unless you step in with self-awareness and critical thinking.

Self-awareness is your ability to notice what’s happening inside you: your emotions, reactions, and habits. It’s recognizing when you’re adopting a friend’s cynicism or false conviction. Critical thinking, meanwhile, is your lens for clarity. It’s questioning why you’re drawn to certain behaviors and whether they align with who you want to be. Mirror neurons help us adapt socially, but adaptation without direction can lead you astray.

Allow Mirror Neurons To Work For You.

  1. Define Your Moral Compass: Take 10 minutes to write down what matters most to you. When you’re clear on your values, you can spot when you’re mirroring something that doesn’t fit and course-correct.

  2. Surround yourself with people who embody the values you admire.

  3. Pause and Observe: Question your thoughts

and align your actions with your values.
